HAWAA
Thanks to the generosity of the people of Haida Gwaii we were able to raise $ 2049 for the Red Cross in Haiti at last weekend's Giant Garage Sale/Bake Sale held at Sk'aadgaa Naay. Haawa to everyone who contributed their time and energy, quality garage sale items, and delicious baked goods. Haawa also to the many people who came out and donated so generously for items at the sale.

We would like to thank everyone who helped us when Emily Goertzen passed away. Especially Elizabeth and Patricia Moore for all the running around and getting everything in order. The doctors and nurses who treated Emily with such loving care, being there when she needed them. Steven Brown for playing his saxophone at the funeral service and Claude Jones for playing his sax at the cemetery.
The men who built and painted her casket so beautifullly, the person who built the cross. Also, the women who lined it so beautifully. The ministers who held the services. The grave diggers and the pall bearers. The wonderful people who stayed up all night at the church.
Everyone who visited Emily and the ones who brought her the beautiful flowers, that was her favorite pass time, working in her garden with her flowers. The loving women who were at the hospital as soon as they heard that she passed away, Winnie Smith, Barbara Humphries, Marina Jones, Lily Bell and Elizabeth Moore, they dressed her so lovingly.
We really appreciated all the people who cooked soups, made sandwiches, baked, and all those who helped to serve the food, also those who helped to clean up aferwards. Thank you for all the flowers, cards and donations
It is good to live on Haida Gwaii, where everyone cares and helps however they can in the time of need.
We reallly appreciated all the help and love shown at this time.
The Goertzen families and the Davidson's (Emily's sisters) and their families. f4

OBITUARY

Kimiko's Eulogy
Haida Laas, Salana, Howa'a
Good people, creator, Thank-you.
Kimiko Nicole von Boetticher was born on June 8, 1968 in Scarborough Ontario, the first daughter of Ernie and Inga Von Boetticher, Kimiko was the third child in their family; Inga having two children prior; Kimiko's older brother Peter, and sister Uschi. Kimiko was later followed by her younger brother Walter.
Inga and Ernie fostered in Kimiko a love of people, nature and spirituality that stayed with her throughout her life.
As a child Kimiko, and her extended family spent their summers at a family cottage on Golden Lake near Algonquin National Park and took full advantage of the opportunity to explore the natural world.
From a young age Kimiko also showed a keen interest in the traditions and culture of the First Nations of the area and spent a lot of time during the summer with friends on the neighbouring Pikwàkanagàn Reserve of the OJIBWAY NATION.
Kimiko graduated from high school and furthered her education completing a Bachelors Degree from the University of Waterloo in Environmental Studies and Geography.
During this time she met and married Barry Becta who travelled with her to Vancouver when Kimiko decided to pursue her Masters degree in Environmental Education at Simon Fraser University.
While in Vancouver, Kimiko watched a television show on the totem poles of SGang Gwaay and decided that the Islands were a place that she wanted to visit and during her final semester at SFU Kimiko was invited by another member of her class, Rosa Bell to attend a potlatch on Haida Gwaii.
Accepting this most honouring invitation Kimiko, her instructor and a number of her class came to Old Massett to help prepare and participate in the festivities. Loving the beauty of this place Kimiko expressed to Rosa that she would love to stay here but a large student loan, few job prospects, not to mention a husband back in Vancouver may be big obstacles. Rosa confidently told Kimiko to pay no mind, she should just come and that everything would work out fine.
During her first visit to Haida Gwaii she met many community members including Skilay, Ernie Collision, who was welcoming to everyone, and offered Kimiko a place to stay anytime she wanted to come back to visit.
Although the offer was sincere, I think Skilay was surprised when Kimiko knocked on his door a month later, while he was in the middle of a full house preparing for another feast, and announced she was back. Without missing a beat, Skilay said, end of the hall on the left and went back to preparing his chowder.
Kimiko put her bags in the room and walked out to the front of Skilay's house overlooking the Delkatla Sanctuary and respectfully stayed out of the way of all the commotion going on in the kitchen but before she could settle an unknown woman's voice said
"What? You think you're a princess? Come over here and peel some potatoes."
I believe with those words Kimiko felt she was part of this community.
Kimiko wrote her thesis in record time and was granted her Masters Degree in Environmental Education after her first submission. Her thesis looked at the role that traditional First Nations knowledge can play in our education and our understanding of our Natural Environment.
Kimiko moved to Haida Gwaii after the completion of her Masters degree and appreciated the hospitality of many Old Massett families contributing by lending a hand whenever and wherever she could. She often said that it was easy to get to know everyone in the community because there was a dinner gathering at a different person's house every night. She met many people assisting with the early days of the Old Massett Haida Language Classes and enjoyed her time with the Nonnies.
Rosa was right, and a few months after coming to the Islands Kimiko got a job as the Coordinator of the newly formed Haida Gwaii Marine Resources Group Association, at the time this group was relatively unique being made up of a half Haida half non-Haida Board committed to agreeing on all the decisions they made. While difficult at times Kimiko used her personal skills and bridged many an impasse earning the respect her board.
Kimiko's husband followed soon after but both of them realizing that they wanted different experiences in life and not wanting to hold each other back returned to Vancouver and they amiably divorced.
I met Kimiko soon after through mutual friends we began an email correspondence. It was made quite clear early on that if I was interested in anything developing I would have to move to Haida Gwaii.
Part of Kimiko's duties with the HGMRGA included the oversight of the Provincial Fisheries Renewal Program and Kimiko worked tirelessly to rehabilitate Salmon Streams damaged by human activity on Islands with many other local groups.
Some of the Highlights of Kimiko's time with HGMRGA included travelling to Ottawa with Guujaaw to speak before a Parliamentary Sub-Committee looking at Bill C-10 the Canadian National Marine Conservation Act. With her knowledge of local traditions Kimiko made and took a witness gift for every member of the Committee which included a fish fridge magnet, agate and scallop shell which she gave to the members at the end of her presentation.
Another highlight was the Salmon Run Youth Exchange where Kimiko organized a trip following the route of the salmon starting on Haida Gwaii and ending in Salmon Arm for 8 Islands youth 9 - 10 years old. The route travelled through the Province and was hosted by different First Nations along the way. It was an incredible experience for the children and luckily myself seeing all aspects of the salmon's life cycle, releasing fry from a hatchery and catching salmon in traditional weirs with the Bonaparte Band of the SHUSWAP NATION at the end of the route. The following year Kimiko helped organize and host a group from the Bonaparte Band that did the same trip in reverse to Haida Gwaii.
Kimiko volunteered in her community filling roles as Cub Scout Leader and a Director on many Islands Boards including the Women's Society, Masset Eagles Swim Club, and the Haida Gwaii Tourism Association.
Environmental Education was always a theme for Kimiko and she developed and contributed to our knowledge through her involvement with many groups and through the teaching of many education programs including Wild BC, Stream keepers, the Tidal Elements Home School, and the local Forest Stewardship program which Kimiko researched, developed and found the funding to see that every student in the school district on Islands in grades 4, 8, and 12 spent time at the Mt. Moresby Adventure Camp, exploring and learning about the forest ecology and the natural wonders of our Islands.
Kimiko's efforts were rewarded daily to her in the community and she was honoured to be invited to many special events with the people she cared for. Paramount to this was when she was invited to attend the replanting of the Golden Spruce seedling along the banks of the Yakoun River. It was an unparalleled honour that we cherished often.
In the years before her Cancer diagnosis Kimiko assisted in restarting the Masset Campus of NWCC and became its Community Learning Facilitator. She worked with many students teaching Essential Skills for work and she enjoyed the interactions with her students and took great pride in their successes.
Kimiko approached her illness as she approached her life, with interest and strength. A strength which she saw in a united Islands community. She believed in the strength of our community and in our islands and our community is a stronger and richer place because of her contributions.
Many people have told me in the past few days that Kimiko was the first person they met when they arrived on Islands and how welcome she made them feel. That can be directly attributed to the welcome the Islands community gave to Kimiko. She knew it was her responsibility to protect and educate people about this place and she welcomed people here because she was welcomed here and because she felt part of this place.
Howa'a / Thank-you for honouring Kimiko's memory and her contributions today.
