submitted by the Haida Gwaii Arts Council-The acclaimed Hamilton-based author Lawrence Hill will be coming to Haida Gwaii, along with fellow writer and wife Miranda Hill. Lawrence's novel The Book of Negroes became a national bestseller and has won many awards, including Canada Reads, the Rogers Writers' Trust Fiction Prize and the Commonwealth Writers' Prize. He is the author of six other books as well, including Any Known Blood and Black Berry, Sweet Juice: On Being Black and White in Canada.
Miranda Hill won the 2011 Writers Trust/McClelland & Stewart prize for her short story "Petitions to Saint Chronic." Her collection of short fiction, "Sleeping Funny", is forthcoming from Doubleday Canada. In addition, Miranda is the founder and executive director of Project Bookmark Canada, an initiative that installs text from stories and poems in the exact physical locations where literary scenes are set.
Lawence and Miranda will do joint readings in Queen Charlotte at the Legion on Friday May 18, at 7:30 pm, and then in Masset on Tuesday May 22 at the Maritime Museum, entry by donation.
